Trains to and from Colorado Springs Airport (COS)

Upon arrival at Colorado Springs Airport (COS), passengers can choose from several ground transportation services, including rental cars, taxis, rideshares, hotel shuttle services, and buses.

There are no active passenger trains at the airport, and the remaining train line serves the tourism industry, namely Pikes Peak Cog Railway.

When in Colorado Springs, it is ideal to rent a car or taxi to your destination for convenience.

Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Passenger Depot (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

The grand depot and Harvey House were built on this historic site in 1917 as a joint Santa Fe/Colorado and Southern Railway facility.

In 1972, the Santa Fe tracks through Colorado Springs were removed and the rail operations were consolidated on the former Rio Grande trackage on the west side of town.

The depot and the nearby express building (later used as a freight house) now serve as Catalyst Campus for Technology and Innovation.

Recognized for its role in rail transportation in Colorado, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Also known as the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the service line climbs one of the most iconic mountains in the United States, Pikes Peak in Colorado.

The base station is in Manitou Springs, near Colorado Springs. Construction started in 1889, and the first train reached the summit in 1891.

Cog railways are common in other parts of the world, but in the US, this is one of only three remaining railways of this type. The other being the older Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire and the short Quincy and Torch Lake Cog Railway.

Originally powered by steam locomotives, the line later switched to diesel-powered locomotives and self-propelled railcars.

It was closed from 2017 to 2021 for a complete renovation, including the replacement of the track infrastructure and the purchase of three new train sets.

From the Cog Railway Depot in the foothills of historic Manitou Springs, you’ll board the train and set out on a 9-mile journey to Pikes Peak’s summit.

Passengers will travel through the Pike National Forest, Engelmann Canyon, and Deer Park.

Cog riders will glimpse the Pikes Peak region that is typically only traveled by experienced backcountry hikers, including unique rock formations, high-elevation flora and fauna, pristine landscapes, and landmarks.

The train travels through multiple life zones on its way to the summit, and you’ll have ample opportunities to view the unique attributes of each one.

At the top of Pikes Peak, passengers will have time to explore the summit.

On a clear day, visitors can see five different states from the summit, including Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Kansas.

The brand-new Summit House experience offers multiple points to take in the views, complete with interesting facts about the region.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway isn’t just a round-trip experience. Visitors can also use the Cog Railway for a one-way trip up or down the mountain.

It takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach the summit, with 40 minutes on top and then 1 hour and 10 minutes back to the Depot.

The round trip is approximately 3 hours.
