San Diego International Airport is a focus city for the airline companies Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, and is rated as the twenty-eighth busiest airport in the United States of America. The airport is recognised by its code of SAN, and it has another name as well, the Lindbergh Field Airport. It serves one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, and handles over 16 million passengers per annum. Facilities at the airport include car hire companies, such as Budget San Diego International Airport, that offer a wide selection of vehicles, as well as services for the benefit of their customers.
Passengers will find three terminal buildings at this American airport. Two are larger, for the majority of airport flights, while one is the Commuter Terminal, specifically for flights between San Diego and Los Angeles. Terminal 2 is used for international flights, and Terminal 1 handles many of the airport’s domestic flights. International flights arrive from areas in Canada, Europe and Mexico. The car rental companies, although not located in the terminal buildings, can easily be accessed from either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 by the courtesy shuttle buses that are available. The shuttles can carry a reasonable number of passengers and their luggage items, and are frequently available twenty-four hours a day. Passengers can, however, call their company from the courtesy telephones that are found in the arrival areas of the terminals.
To find the shuttles at Terminal 1, passengers will exit the building and look for the centre traffic aisle, and at Terminal 2, passengers will leave the building and head for the traffic island on the west end of the terminal. If assistance is required, an airport volunteer can be located. Passengers who require a vehicle with a wheelchair lift can contact Budget.
It is easy to drive by rented car in San Diego. There are many large roads that leave the city, and roads that are within the city are generally well organised. The city centre has roads that are arranged in a grid-like pattern, and which are numbered and lettered for convenience. Several parking areas can be found as well, along Ash Street, West Broadway, 6th Avenue, 7th Avenue and others. The road rules are important to obey in the United States, and all drivers should remain within the speed limits. Any traffic fines incurred will be the responsibility of the renter, and not the car rental company. Budget one way hires may be permitted (when the vehicle is returned to a different rental locations), but cross-border rentals are most often not allowed. Vehicles must therefore remain to the north of the Mexican border. From San Diego International Airport, one way hires may be more expensive than an ordinary rental, but sometimes their convenience is worth the few extra dollars.
The San Diego International Airport car rental companies, including Budget, require their primary renters to be over the age of 25, however, persons younger than 25 may hire a vehicle with an additional charge for young drivers insurance. They have other restrictions as well, such as limited vehicle categories, and they may not use a debit card at the start of the rental period. Regardless of age, however, all renters will need a major credit card in their name in order to hire a vehicle. Cards accepted include American Express, Diner’s Club Int’l, Visa, MasterCard, Sears, PHH, Discover and AT & T Capital. If a debit card is used, it must be one with the Visa or MasterCard logo. A debit card may also not be used if renting a Street Fleet vehicle. These cars can be hired by their specific makes and models, rather than just by category. All persons registered on the rental contract should be present to collect the vehicle, and will require a form of identification other than a drivers license.
This airport is one of Budget’s Fastbreak locations, where Fastbreak counter service is available. All members of this program enjoy faster and more convenient reservations, rentals and returns, and may even be able to take advantage of certain discounted car rental rates. There is no charge to become a Fastbreak member, and it is not a contract of any form. Budget hand controls for disabled drivers are available as well, and child seats and satellite navigation systems can be requested. From San Diego Airport, hand controls are free of charge, but all other items of equipment will cost a few extra dollars per day of car hire, or per rental agreement. All things necessary for your trip in San Diego should be hired in advance, as there is no guarantee that they will be available at the rental counters.
There is a wide selection of vehicles available from the San Diego International Airport car hire companies. The smaller models are usually more affordable, and could be similar to the Hyundai Accent and Ford Focus, while larger family cars have a higher price tag, and include the Chevy Impala and Ford Fusion. A couple of SUVs for five passengers are often hired by families as well, such as the Ford Escape and Ford Edge, and business customers may prefer a more elegant vehicle, similar to the Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car. Further vehicles available from Budget include the Ford Expedition, Ford Explorer, Dodge Caravan and the Ford Econoline, which is a Passenger Van for twelve people. All Budget’s cars in the Economy, Compact and Intermediate categories are considered as eco-friendly, and are fuel efficient. They are the popular Budget ‘Green Machines’.
