Car Hire at Phoenix Airport - Information

Phoenix Sky Harbour Airport operates its own Rental Car Center, where several well known car hire providers are located. Walk-up customer hire is rather limited due to demand and it is therefore recommended to reserve a hire vehicle prior to the day or arrival.

The Rental Car Center is located at 1805 East Sky Harbor Circle South, which is between 16th Street and 24th Street, just south of Buckeye Road. An airport shuttle takes passengers from the curb outside the baggage claim levels at each terminal to the Rental Car Center at 5 to 10 minute intervals.

The car rental companies operating from the Center are Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless and Thrifty. There’s even a small snack bar called Fresh Gourmet to Go within the Rental Car Center for passengers who are in need of refreshments while they wait their turn for receipt of car keys, documents and vehicle.

A central desk allows customers to call ahead and make reservations on +1 602 683 3741. The car rental information desk is manned from Mondays to Fridays between the hours of 8.30am and 5.00 pm.

It is of course possible to contact the car rental companies directly. Booking car hire online is typically cheaper than hiring at the airport. Vehicles are usually displayed in categories or classes according to size and the main features of the vehicle as well as details of what is included in the rental are also displayed.

Car rental is very affordable in the USA, particularly because there is so much competition between the car rental providers. Weekend deals in particular are very cheap indeed and popular tourist attractions like Mystery Castle, located in the foothills of South Mountain Park at the edge of Phoenix are best visited by hire car. This mock castle was actually constructed in the 1930s by a man called Boyce Luther Gulley and lies rather close to the Thunderbirds Golf Course and Resort, making this a day out for all the family.

The city of Tempe lies just south of Phoenix and is worth a day trip by rented car. There’s boating fun on Tempe Town Lake, a visit to the Stray Cat Theatre or the Tempe Centre for the Arts, an enjoyable evening with vibrant student nightlife on Mill Avenue and the stunning beauty of the Sonoran Desert just for starters!

Just 60 miles northwest of Phoenix visitors will find Wickenburg, which still has many working ranches, where city dwellers can learn how to ride, work and camp with real cowboys and cowgirls. They might even sing a song around the campfire before handing out a dish of stew or beans.
